Role: Team Manager
I recently started a secondment as a Team Manager in Ambient at Morrisons Stockton RDC after successfully applying for the Sir Ken Morrison Leadership School. In my role, I manage the intake of all ambient goods to site, as well as the picking and loading of ambient products. My day-to-day responsibilities involve communicating with colleagues across the operation, providing updates and feedback to managers, and working closely with store managers and transport departments. I also make sure procedures and health and safety regulations are followed while helping to create a safe and positive working environment and ensuring deadlines are met.
Before moving into this role, I gained warehouse and logistics experience as a Key Warehouse Operative in Fresh and Chill. That experience gave me the knowledge and understanding needed to take the next step in my career. I did not go to university, and my progression has come through hands-on experience, development opportunities and learning on the job.
I became aware of the opportunity after being accepted onto the Sir Ken Morrison Leadership School. When the position became available, I applied for the role and was successful. Being part of the Leadership School gave me the confidence to take on a new challenge and continue developing my career within Morrisons.
One of the things that first attracted me to logistics was the fast-paced environment. I like to be busy, and logistics provides exactly that. After joining Morrisons, I quickly became aware of the opportunities available within the business and the support offered to colleagues who want to progress. I was also keen to move into Ambient because it would give me a broader understanding of the site, having previously worked only in Fresh and Chill.
My interest in logistics started much earlier in my career. When I was 19, I worked in manufacturing and logistics and enjoyed the pace of the environment. Later, I changed careers to fit around family commitments, but once I was able to step back from those commitments, I chose to return to logistics because it was an industry I enjoyed working in.
The best thing about my role is the variety it offers. No two days are the same, and there is always something new to focus on. Above all, the best part of the job is the team I work with. Working alongside a supportive group of colleagues makes every day rewarding.
My career highlight so far has been being accepted onto Cohort 6 of the Sir Ken Morrison Leadership School. Being selected for the programme was a significant achievement for me and provided the opportunity to continue developing my skills and progress into a management role. It has been an important milestone in my career journey and has opened up new opportunities for the future.
