I’m currently a Logistics and Supply Chain Management Degree Apprentice with GXO, working as an Inbound Clerk at Stoke NDC and supporting the Inbound Manager in the day-to-day operation. My role has given me the opportunity to develop a strong understanding of customer fulfilment and supply chain management while gaining practical experience in a busy logistics environment.
My interest in logistics began during my Business A Level studies, where I found the subject particularly interesting. I wanted to learn more about supply chains and customer fulfilment, and I was drawn to an industry that is focused on continuous improvement. Logistics felt like the right fit for me because I enjoy finding ways to improve processes and developing my knowledge.
When it came to choosing my next step after education, I decided that a degree apprenticeship was the best option for me. I wanted the opportunity to learn directly from experienced professionals, build industry knowledge from the start of my career and gain real-world experience while working towards a degree. The ability to earn a full-time salary, avoid student debt and continue living at home while studying were also important factors in my decision.
Before starting my apprenticeship, I had certain expectations about what the role would involve, but the reality has been different in some ways. The role is more demanding than I expected, and balancing a full-time job alongside university assignments can be challenging. However, I enjoy the responsibility and the opportunity to work under pressure while continuing to develop my skills.
One of the most rewarding parts of the programme so far has been meeting and working with so many different people. I’ve enjoyed building relationships, supporting colleagues and learning from experienced professionals across the business. Visiting other sites around the network has also been a highlight, as it has helped me understand how the wider business operates. I’ve also enjoyed getting involved in engagement activities, including taking part in the GXO Run.
Since starting my apprenticeship, I have developed a range of new skills. Communication has been one of the biggest areas of growth for me. I’ve learned the importance of adapting how I communicate depending on the person I’m speaking to in order to achieve the best understanding and outcomes. My digital skills have also improved significantly, particularly in Excel and Warehouse Management Systems. Before starting the apprenticeship, I had very limited experience with these tools, but I now feel confident using both as part of my role.
A personal highlight so far has been winning the Continuous Improvement Idea of the Month award. It was a proud moment and reinforced my passion for finding better ways of working and contributing to positive change within the business.
For anyone considering their options after receiving their results, my advice would be not to panic. Whatever happens, there are always opportunities available. For me, a degree apprenticeship has been the perfect combination of education and practical experience, allowing me to gain industry knowledge while working towards a degree.
I would also encourage anyone considering a career in logistics to take the opportunity if it is available to them. It is a fascinating industry with far more variety than many people realise. My experience with GXO has shown me that there are a huge range of career paths and opportunities available, making it an exciting sector to build a career in.
