Steven Cleary – GXO

Company: GXO

Role: Head of Development

I’m a Head of Development at GXO Logistics, working directly with our Sales Director. My role is focused on delivering new business, primarily across transport opportunities, which is where my background lies. However, I also get involved in a wide range of solutions across different sectors.

I work alongside three Business Development Managers, and together we’re responsible for identifying, developing and securing new opportunities to grow the business. Collaboration is a big part of what we do: we work closely with solutions, finance and bid management teams, as well as key stakeholders across our business units, to develop the right offer for each customer.

I’ve been in the logistics sector for around 25 years, and at this stage in my career, experience and a track record of success are what matter most. That said, my academic background helped me get started – I studied Business Studies at a college within the University of London.

My career path hasn’t been completely linear. I spent 15 years in a privately owned logistics business, working my way up from a junior position into more senior roles. Around 10 years ago, I moved to Wincanton through a recruitment agency, and then later transitioned into GXO. My original role at Wincanton Containers was Head of Commercial, where I oversaw sales, customer service and account management, before moving into a company-wide sales role.

What originally attracted me to these roles was the opportunity for development and challenge. I’ve always been motivated by roles where I can push myself, learn and take on new responsibilities, and sales in logistics offers exactly that.

I wouldn’t say I always knew logistics was the career for me. Instead, I followed where my skills naturally led me. Over time, I’ve realised that being organised, analytical and competitive really suits a sales environment. Along the way, I’ve developed adaptability, resilience, strong people skills, and a deep understanding of the sector and operations, but those came with experience rather than from the start.

One of the best things about my role is the level of autonomy I have and the challenge of delivering against targets. I also really enjoy the variety – working with different customers, across multiple sectors, and across the breadth of GXO keeps things interesting and engaging.

When it comes to career highlights, there isn’t a single standout moment. What I’m most proud of is the consistency I’ve shown over time, progressing within the organisations I’ve worked for, continuously building my experience, and developing my capability. That consistency has allowed me to adapt to change, take on new challenges, and grow alongside the businesses I’ve been part of.

For anyone considering a career in logistics, I’d say it’s a sector where you can really shape your own path. There are so many opportunities to develop, try different roles, and build a long-term career, especially if you’re willing to learn, stay adaptable, and take on new challenges as they come.
