National Highways have an excellent opportunity for an Engineering Team Manager to join and lead our Geotechnical team in the East region. The Engineering Team Manager will manage National Highways Geotechnical assets and will lead a team of geotechnical engineers in identifying and prioritising asset needs and developing early scheme solutions for asset renewal improvement, whilst also contributing to the region’s long terms asset management plan to deliver National Highways strategic objectives.

This role can be based from either of our Bedford, Cambridge or Ipswich offices on a hybrid basis.

Please note that You will be required to drive as part of your role and you will need to have a full clean driving license to be considered for this position and during employment.

What you’ll be leading on

Provide leadership, direction, and line management for a team of specialist engineers, ensuring timely setting of objectives, performance management reviews and development of appropriate succession and development plans.
Collaborate with engineering colleagues, Project Managers, Service Delivery Managers and Route Managers to ensure that regional forward programmes, capital investment and maintenance plans reflect asset needs and considerations, are developed in a way that is compliant with the relevant technical policies and standards, and take into account new techniques, materials, buildability, and costs
Act as the Geotechnical Maintenance Liaison Engineer for the East Region
Undertake Certification of Reports and authorisation/ approval of Data Records
Lead in the delivery of effective geotechnical asset management and a reliable forward programme that supports the successful delivery of National Highways Delivery Plan and corporate objectives.
Lead on preparing annual geotechnical asset management plans and geotechnical risk management reviews.
Develop and strengthen the case for future investment in the region’s geotechnical assets.
Be responsible for the Geotechnical Inspection Programme, in terms of planning principal inspections, annual monitoring and other ad hoc inspections.
Responsibility for ensuring the geotechnical database is updated and that Inspections are authorised.

To be Successful

A Chartered Engineer of a Professional Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Institution
Experience of geotechnical asset risk management and geotechnical asset management planning
Thorough understanding of geotechnical related highway engineering standards, policies, and strategies
Extensive experience of geotechnical engineering, earthworks remediation solutions and techniques in relation to highways.
Experienced in methods of inspection and recognition of geotechnical characteristics, assessment of observations and grading of geotechnical features.
