What you’ll be doing

Our three-year Environment graduate programme starts in September 2024 and gives you the opportunity to be at the heart of exciting projects making significant improvements to the environment surrounding our roads and local communities.

Our work manages key sites and habitats around the major roads network and takes place over a large geographical area.

Our work centres around maintenance of the road network and the management of the soft landscape surrounding it.

You will work within the Midlands Environment Team within Operations. Guided and mentored by our experienced team, you’ll take on projects and responsibilities that will build on your existing environmental skills and knowledge.

Our team employs a variety of environmental professionals who specialise in:
•Environmental management and audit
•Ecology
•Arboriculture
•Environmental assessment
•Environmental survey and habitat assessment
•Waste management
•Environmental works identification and development
•GIS applications

Parts of our work involve being adjacent to a live traffic environment. You will be required to drive as part of your role, and you will need to have a full clean driving licence to be considered for this position.

You’ll be able to apply your learning across a range of environmental disciplines linked to our key areas of work in a practical setting, such as:

Asset Management

Asset needs identification, arboriculture inspection, invasive weed management, soft estate inspection, asset data collection and management and GIS applications, monitoring surveys.

Environmental Management

Environmental Management System, process design and review, environmental inspection of scheme and maintenance works, review and investigation advice for environmental incidents, environmental communications, environmental training for internal staff and contractors

Environmental Assessment

Completion of environmental assessments for a variety of engineering disciplines, assessment of maintenance activities, biodiversity net gain baseline calculations 

Environmental Schemes
First stage development of environmental needs and schemes for biodiversity and other environmental topics.

You’ll also need to meet these essential qualification requirements:
•An undergraduate (e.g., BA, BSc) degree at 2:2 or above in environmental assessment, environmental design or other environment or sustainability-focussed subject area in line with our key areas of work. This includes but is not limited to cultural heritage/archaeology, ecology, noise, air quality, water management, carbon management, landscape or planning

It is key to know all offers to onto our graduate schemes are subject to satisfactory completion of our pre-employment checks. This includes a Right to Work check, reference check and a DBS criminal record check.
