I currently work as a Key Warehouse Operative at Morrisons, where I pick fresh products and also support across Goods In and splitting tasks. My role is varied and hands-on, which keeps every shift different and engaging.

I didn’t need any specific qualifications to start in this role. Before joining, I studied at Wakefield College and achieved a Level 3 Business qualification, which helped me build a good foundation in communication and understanding how businesses operate.

I found the job through the Morrisons website, and I also had family members working there, which gave me a good insight into what the role would be like. What initially attracted me was the good pay and the career prospects, but once I started, I realised there was much more to gain from the experience.

Through school, sports, and everyday life, I developed strong communication and interpersonal skills. Playing rugby has been a big influence, as it taught me how to work effectively as part of a team, stay disciplined, and support others, all of which are really important in a warehouse environment.

The best thing about my job is the independence. I enjoy being able to focus, do my job well, and take pride in what I achieve each day. At the same time, I’m part of a supportive team, which makes the environment even better.

My biggest career highlight so far has been being accepted onto a degree apprenticeship programme. It’s a huge opportunity for me to continue learning, develop new skills, and progress my career even further.

My journey shows that you don’t always need specific qualifications to get started – with the right attitude, teamwork, and willingness to learn, there are great opportunities to grow and succeed in logistics.

I am currently a Shift Manager in an ambient warehouse, where I take responsibility for the late shift operations. My role involves overseeing the picking of the 24-hour dispatch, ensuring any remaining loads and goods-in tasks are completed for the day, and then setting up and launching the next 24-hour cycle. It’s a fast-paced role that requires strong organisation, clear communication, and the ability to make decisions quickly to keep everything running smoothly.

The role itself doesn’t require specific qualifications, but I progressed into this position through a Logistics Graduate Scheme, which required a minimum of a 2:2 degree. I studied Business and Economics at university, which gave me a solid foundation in analytical thinking and understanding how businesses operate.

I found the opportunity through a job site and was immediately drawn to the nature of the sector. Logistics is active, dynamic, and constantly changing – no two days are the same. I enjoy the need to think on my feet and work with a wide range of stakeholders every day, from warehouse teams to planners and store networks.

During school and previous experiences, I developed key skills that helped me realise I was suited to this type of role. I’ve always enjoyed working with numbers and problem-solving, but equally important were my people skills. Being involved in presentations and captaining a football team helped me build confidence, leadership, and communication skills, all of which are essential in my current role.

The best part of my job is seeing a well-thought-out plan come together. When a shift runs smoothly, targets are met, and we deliver a great service to stores, it’s incredibly satisfying. It’s a real team effort, and being part of that success is what makes the role rewarding.

My biggest career highlight so far has been successfully transitioning from the Graduate Scheme into a Level 3 operational role. That was always my goal when I started, so achieving it felt like a major milestone and a strong step forward in my career.

Logistics is a sector where you can develop quickly, take on real responsibility, and see the impact of your work every single day, which is what makes it such an exciting place to build a career.

I am currently on a secondment as a Team Manager in the ambient warehouse, a role I’ll be in until later this year. During this time, I’m working towards passing my Leadership School assessments, and once I’ve completed these, I’m hoping to step into a full-time management role and continue progressing my career.

In terms of qualifications, I achieved C grades at GCSE, and that was the extent of my formal education at the time. Since then, I’ve had a huge amount of support in developing my skills and confidence. I didn’t always believe I was capable of progressing, but taking that big step forward, and having the right people around me, helped me realise I have far more to offer than I first thought.

I didn’t go to university. Instead, I studied plumbing at college and qualified as a plumber. Unfortunately, a knee injury meant I couldn’t continue in that line of work, but it led me to an opportunity at Morrisons Logistics — which turned out to be the right path for me.

I started as a Picker during COVID and worked my way up by getting trained in every role within the freezer department, including admin. As I gained more experience, I realised I wanted to progress further and challenge myself. That’s when I was given the opportunity to step into a Team Manager secondment.

What attracted me most to the role was the chance to help people. I knew I wanted to do more than just picking – I wanted to develop my skills, support others, and grow as a person.

The best thing about my role is being able to bring out the best in people. I love seeing my colleagues come into work happy and motivated, and building strong relationships where we support each other. I always try to lead by example: if I give my best, I find that others are inspired to do the same, and that creates a really positive working environment.

My biggest career highlight so far has been securing the Team Manager position, especially after doubting myself for so long. Receiving positive feedback and praise from senior management has been incredibly rewarding and has boosted my confidence even more.
